Is the Skool app free? Yes — but here's what does cost money

Members never pay for the app. Joining free communities is also free. Only paid communities and owner-side hosting cost money — and that's set at the platform level, not the app level.

What free means in the Skool app context

The Skool app — the iOS and Android downloads from the official App Store and Play Store — costs nothing to install. There's no purchase price, no in-app purchase upgrade required to use core features, no ad-supported tier you can pay to remove ads.

What the app accesses underneath is skool.com, the SaaS platform. Whether that costs money depends on what you're using it for. Joining a free community as a member: zero cost. Joining a paid community: pay what the owner sets. Hosting your own community as an owner: $99/month after the 14-day trial.

The app is purely the delivery surface. It doesn't have its own pricing layer.

For members — when it's actually free

If you're joining someone else's community:

  • Sign-up: free, no credit card required
  • App download: free on iOS and Android
  • Joining free communities: free, no payment at any step
  • Joining paid communities: pay the membership fee at Stripe checkout (no extra app fee)

Members can join unlimited free communities. There's no platform-level subscription on the member side. The mobile app gives you the same access as the web — push notifications are an app advantage, but feature parity with web is roughly 90%.

If you ever see upgrade your Skool app as a paid pop-up, that's not real — Skool's app has no premium tier. It's likely a phishing attempt or unofficial app, not the real Skool product.

For owners — what the trial covers

If you're creating a community:

  • App download: still free
  • Trial: 14 days, full feature access, no credit card required to start
  • After trial: $99/month per community, billed via Stripe

The trial is genuine — you can publish, invite members, build courses, run events. On day 12 or 13, Skool prompts you to add a card. If you don't, the community is paused (not deleted) on day 15. Members can't post and you can't post, but the data is preserved. After ~90 days of pause, Skool warns about deletion.

There's no permanent free tier for owners. Skool has explicitly chosen flat $99/month over a free-forever-with-restrictions model. The simplicity is the moat.

What isn't free — being honest about the costs

If you're an owner running a Skool community at any scale, the realistic monthly costs:

  • Skool platform: $99/month
  • Stripe transaction fees: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (member-paid, baked into checkout)
  • External tools you'll likely add: email marketing tool ($29–$99/month), webinar platform if needed (Zoom $15+/month), automation tooling (free or $29+/month)
  • Apps for content creation: video editing, asset libraries, AI tools — variable

For a serious operator, total tooling cost runs $200–$400/month. If you're netting $5K+/month from a paid community, this is rounding error. If you're netting under $1K, the stack overhead matters.

The genuinely-free tools layer — tools4skool

If you're a Skool owner and want operational tooling without raising your bill, tools4skool has a free-forever plan:

  • 1 active DM sequence
  • 20 DMs per day
  • 1 connected skool.com account
  • Slash commands and post scheduling
  • CSV member export

That's enough for owners with under 100 members to run welcome DMs and basic onboarding without paying anything beyond Skool's $99/month. Paid tiers ($29 / $59 / $149) unlock more sequences, higher daily DM caps, multiple accounts, churn saver, comment miner, and the Kanban pipeline.

The Chrome extension piggybacks your existing skool.com session — no password stored, no API token. If you cancel, your data stays in Skool because tools4skool doesn't own any of it.

Stop leaving DMs, churn, and revenue on the table.

tools4skool plugs the holes Skool ships with. Free plan forever, paid tiers from $29/mo.
