TL;DR
Skool uitstappies is Afrikaans for school outings — the day trips, museum visits, nature reserves and educational excursions schools organise during the term. It comes from uitstap (to step out) plus the diminutive -pie, giving the gentle, friendly tone the word carries. Most South African schools run between 1 and 4 uitstappies per learner per year, more in Foundation Phase. Costs are usually R80–R600 depending on travel distance and entrance fees, and parents must sign a consent form before the child can attend. The term has nothing to do with the skool.com community platform — that is covered briefly at the end for visitors who landed here by mistake.

The word itself
Uitstap means to step out or go out, in the same way English uses outing. The diminutive -pie makes it small and friendly, the way dorp becomes dorpie and kind becomes kindjie. So a skool uitstappie is literally a little school outing — and the word is almost always used in the plural, uitstappies, because schools talk about them as a programme.
In formal Afrikaans you might also see skoolekskursie (school excursion) or uitstap without the diminutive. The shorter, friendlier uitstappie is what teachers and parents use in everyday conversation, on WhatsApp groups, and on the school calendar.
Common skool uitstappies in South Africa
Foundation Phase classics:
- Pretoria Zoo or Johannesburg Zoo — animals, picnic, walking tour
- Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Joburg — hands-on science
- Cango Caves if you're near the Klein Karoo
- A working fire station or police station — community helpers theme
- The local Spar or Pick n Pay for a shopping/maths exercise
Intermediate and Senior Phase:
- Voortrekker Monument for history
- Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg
- Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town
- Maropeng at the Cradle of Humankind
- A nature reserve like Suikerbosrand for biology
Grade 12 and matric uitstappies are sometimes overnight — Eersterivier camps, Drakensberg hiking trips, or a coastal trip. These cost more (R1,500–R5,000) and need a longer planning runway.
How schools plan a uitstappie
A teacher proposes the trip 4–8 weeks ahead. The school office handles bus quotes (usually a 50-seater coach or two minibuses), entrance bookings, and a quote letter. The Department of Basic Education requires a risk assessment, first-aid cover, and a chaperone ratio that is typically 1 adult per 10 learners in primary school and 1 per 15 in high school.
A permission slip (Afrikaans: toestemmingsbrief) goes home with the learner. Without a signed slip, the child stays at school in a parallel class. Payment is usually requested 2 weeks before departure so the school can confirm the booking. Some schools build a small uitstappie levy into the annual fees and the trip then feels free at the time.
What parents should check before sending the kit
Pack water, a labelled snack, and one extra layer regardless of weather. Closed shoes for any reserve or zoo trip. Sun hat and sunscreen even in winter. Phones are usually banned on uitstappies — don't fight that one, the teacher has thirty other phones to worry about.
If your child has medication or a serious allergy, tell the trip leader in writing and put a labelled dose in the bag with clear instructions. Make sure the school has your current emergency number on file. And accept that the bus may run 30 minutes late on the return — it almost always does. The closing line on the toestemmingsbrief asking you to collect by a certain time is real, so plan transport home.
