Skool free trial: how to use 14 days to launch your community

If you can land 5-10 paying members during the trial, you're net positive on the platform fee from day one. Here's how to make the trial pay for itself.

What's included in the Skool trial

Full feature access for 14 days. Course delivery, community feed, calendar, leaderboard, mobile app, custom URL, Stripe payments. Take member payments during the trial — Skool processes them, just doesn't bill you the platform fee until day 15.

The only thing the trial doesn't waive is Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 fee on each transaction. That's payment processing, not Skool, and it applies trial or no trial.

Do you need a credit card for the trial?

Generally no for new accounts, though Skool can change this. The card is collected before the trial ends if you want to keep the community active. If you don't add a card, the community pauses on day 15.

This matters for validation — you can sign up, build your structure, invite a charter cohort, take their payments, and decide whether the platform fee is worth it without putting your card down up front. Most other community platforms require a card from day one.

How to actually use the 14 days

Day 1: Sign up, name your community, set URL, configure onboarding questions, set pricing.

Day 1-2: Build pinned Welcome post and 1-2 course modules. Don't over-build.

Day 3-7: Invite charter members from your existing audience. Aim for 5-10 paying members at $30-$50/month.

Day 7-14: Run a live call. Reply to every member post. DM each new member personally within 24 hours.

Day 14: Decide. If you have charter members and the engagement feels right, add a card and continue. If not, let the community pause and reassess.

What happens after the trial ends

Day 15: If you've added a card, $99 is charged and the community continues normally.

If you haven't, the community pauses. Content is preserved, members keep their accounts, but no new posts or signups until you upgrade. There's no automatic deletion.

Members who paid during the trial: their subscriptions continue regardless of whether you upgrade. They keep getting charged monthly via Stripe. If your community is paused, they can't access content, which gets messy fast — most operators upgrade rather than pause if they have paying members.

Stop leaving DMs, churn, and revenue on the table.
