Sam Ovens — the founder

Sam Ovens founded Skool. New Zealand-born, previously ran Consulting.com (originally SnapInspect), one of the largest online education businesses of its era. His thesis for Skool: every other community platform was over-engineered. The right product was opinionated minimalism — one feed, one course tab, one leaderboard. That's exactly what Skool ships.

Ovens is hands-on with product decisions. The slow, deliberate roadmap is by design — he'd rather ship few well-considered features than many half-baked ones. Alex Hormozi joined Skool as an investor and partner in 2023. He's not a co-founder — Skool existed before he joined. But his investment and public promotion of the platform brought a flood of creators to Skool from his audience.

Hormozi is best known for Acquisition.com and his books $100M Offers and $100M Leads. His audience overlaps perfectly with Skool's target market: creators selling community-led products. The partnership has been a distribution force-multiplier for Skool.

The team beyond the founders

Skool keeps team size and structure largely private. The team is small, fully remote, and US-based. There's no public org chart and no aggressive hiring sprees — Skool is optimising for product focus over headcount.

This is consistent with founder-led, profitable companies. The downside: support is in-app chat with sometimes-slow response on feature requests. The upside: the product won't suddenly pivot to please VCs.
